What are Fillers and what is their purpose?
“Filler” is a term that is used to describe a specific substance (usually a hyaluronic acid based product) that is injected into or under the skin to increase volume. By injecting these gels into different layers of the skin, we can smooth out lines, soften creases, restore lost volume, and enhance the natural contours.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural substance found in the human body. It plays a role in the structure of our bones, joints, muscles, and skin. HA is an important molecule involved in skin moisture. Juvederm® is one of the leading brands of hyaluronic fillers, and we are pleased to be able to offer their full spectrum of products to help rejuvenate your skin.
What is treatment like?
If you are interested in fillers, you will have an initial consultation with Dr. Carmichael. We will take a series of photos of your face, and discuss your concerns. Our goal is to keep the injection process as pain-free as possible, so we will use a topical numbing cream and ice as needed. Juvederm® also comes pre-mixed with lidocaine (a numbing agent) which will also enhance your comfort. Depending on the type of filler and location, you can expect injections with small needles, catheters, or both. A catheter is a small slender tube with a blunt tip that is inserted through a small puncture hole made in the skin. Catheter injection with fillers is considered the safest method with the lowest risk to underlying blood vessels and surrounding tissues. Consequently, there is very little bruising when catheters are used. Treatment time will vary from 15-30 minutes.
What can I expect?
The effects of fillers are evident immediately, and will last from 6-18 months, depending on the product used and the site of treatment. Our goal is to give you a natural, more youthful, appearance. We will provide you with some basic care instructions afterwards. Essentially, there is no down-time after treatment, and you are able to return to all your regular activities.
